SmartCore Expedites Passenger Verification and Improves Security at Seoul’s Incheon International Airport with Integrated Biometrics’ Columbo Fingerprint Scanner

Integrated Biometrics’ light emitting sensor (LES) fingerprint technology an essential part of Korean border control process

International airports must accommodate massive numbers of passengers through customs and immigration queues quickly and efficiently while meeting stringent security requirements to identify criminals and terrorists, as well as to ensure only legal visitors enter the country. For Seoul’s Incheon International Airport, the solution to achieving that balance comes from SmartCore Inc’s MBAS Plus immigration control devices, which employ Integrated Biometrics’ Columbo single-print FBI certified fingerprint scanner.

SmartCore, one of Asia’s leading providers of immigration processing solutions, provided 62 MBAS Plus multi-biometric acquisition stations as part of Incheon International Airport’s new Terminal 2. MBAS Plus combines index finger scans from both hands with a photograph of the visitor’s face. This combination delivers rapid enrollment and identification that helped Incheon International Airport successfully process the extreme crowds that accompanied the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

The Integrated Biometrics Columbo sensors used in the new MBAS Plus product generate FBI Certified fingerprint images to quickly and accurately compare with standards-based criminal, terrorist, and immigration databases from around the world, significantly enhancing the capabilities of the MBAS product line.

“They’re fast and accurate, and there’s no need to clean the surface between scans. We needed a solution that connected our products with international law enforcement, as well as the ability to take the daily pounding that comes from immigration control queues at a major international airport. Columbo exceeds our highest expectations.”

The success of the MBAS Plus deployment at Terminal 2 has led to plans to replace other identity verification units across the rest of the airport. SmartCore has similar airport solutions employing Integrated Biometrics’ Kojak 10-finger scanners in other Southeast Asian markets and intends to expand its use of these sensors in future offerings.

Stephen Thies, Chief Executive Officer of Integrated Biometrics, added

“Our patented LES technology is perfect for the high-volume environments at airports – both at self-service immigration control devices and for mobile solutions that help quickly process passengers, employees, and contractors. That’s why we’re in use at 24 major North American airports as well as an expanding international presence, and we look forward to working closely with SmartCore to grow our mutual success across Asia.”
