In a Rapidly Shrinking World, Integrated Biometrics Scanners Are Key to Critical Border Protection and Management in 36 Countries
With the world beginning the slow process of countries re-opening their borders as the COVID-19 pandemic wanes, we are reminded about the importance of border protection and management.
Managing and protecting borders has been, and continues to be, a priority and a challenge for every country in the world. While threats to—and considerations around—border security present differently depending on the country and their issues, there is a common theme: governments must effectively protect and manage their borders and points of entry for the safety and well-being of their citizens and those who are traveling, visiting, or working legitimately in their country.
Integrated Biometrics (IB) is proud to provide fingerprint biometric solutions that address these critical needs all over the world. Agencies count on IB’s scanners for accurate, efficient identity processes in areas where establishing or verifying identity is key.
IB’s full line of FBI-certified fingerprint biometric scanners are built for durability, accuracy, high throughput, mobility, and ease of use even in the harshest environments. They play a critical role in border control and management around the world as either fixed, standalone implementations or integrated into mobile or multimodal systems (tablets, kiosks, etc.).
As part of solutions from New Zealand, China, and the Philippines to Italy, Norway, and Pakistan—countries are using IB scanners every day to support their efforts. Here are just a few examples:
- The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) uses IB’s Kojak livescan 10-fingerprint scanners in more than 5,000 workstations within the United States Ports of Entry (air, land and sea) to rapidly process the nearly one million individuals who enter the US each day. In addition, the mobility features of IB scanners allow agents at mobile border gate environments to enroll and verify individuals in the field using nothing more than a handheld fingerprint reader.
- The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine uses IB’s Sherlock scanners to verify the identities of the thousands of travelers who cross the country’s borders each day, including remote areas with extreme environmental conditions. These security checks immediately identify individuals prohibited from entering Ukraine for any reason, including known criminals or terrorists.
- Seoul’s Incheon International Airport employs IB’s Columbo single-print scanners for rapid enrollment and identification of passengers through customs and immigration queues. These checks also address stringent security requirements to identify criminals and terrorists and ensure only legal visitors enter the country. IB scanners were also instrumental in the successful processing of extremely large crowds during the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
- South Sudan, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, and more than 50 border points around the world are using IB scanners to combat modern threats, including traveler identity fraud, human trafficking, transnational organized crime, and money laundering. IB scanners improve the experience and safety of travelers and citizens. They are used in electronic gates, kiosks, mobile units, and identification services at land, air, and maritime borders with high volume passenger flow and challenging environments.
