The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office in Akron, Ohio, has acquired DataWorks Plus’ Evolution 3 fingerprint scanning technology to improve the speed and accuracy of identifying the deceased. The smartphone-based device captures a deceased individual’s fingerprints and attempts to match them against criminal databases from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the FBI in as little as two minutes. This new technology helps the county provide closure to families and friends of the deceased.
“The families definitely get anxious waiting to hear,” said Dr. Lisa Kohler, Summit County Medical Examiner. “For us to be able to say in a much faster turnaround time that ‘yes, we have found your loved one’…it makes a big difference.”
Since adopting the technology in September 2023, the devices have aided in the positive identification of over 17 decedents.
