Celebrating International Identity Day with Nigeria

Continuing the Push for a U.N.-backed International Identity Day

“The time has come for the world to recognize one of the most important assets a human can possess, their legal identity.”  In one simple yet powerful statement in 2018, Dr. Joseph J. Atick, Executive Chairman of ID4Africa, captured the importance of establishing a day of recognition to raise awareness about the critical role identity plays in empowering all people to exercise their rights and responsibilities “fairly and equitably in a modern society”.

Today, Integrated Biometrics (IB) joins Nigeria in celebrating National Identity Day, which was officially recognized by that country’s government in 2019 in support of the movement to convince the United Nations to recognize September 16th as International Identity Day. The seventh most populous country in the world, Nigeria clearly understands the importance of establishing personal verifiable identity for every individual, petitioning for and receiving $433 million from the World Bank and partners to fund the registration of nearly 100 million people in the country.

We are thrilled with the importance an unmistakable identity has gained and appreciate the continued efforts our partners in government, NGOs, non-profits, and companies alike are making toward the goal… – David Gerulski EVP, Integrated Biometrics

IB has worked hand-in-hand with the government of Nigeria as well as other African nations and ID4Africa to provide individuals in developing countries with the ability to establish provable identity, opening the door to basic human rights—food, benefits, healthcare, education, safety, the right to vote, economic development, and more.

“Integrated Biometrics is proud to have been one of the first organizations to publicly support Dr. Atick and the ID4Africa team regarding official recognition of September 16th as International Identity Day. We are thrilled with the importance an unmistakable identity has gained and appreciate the continued efforts our partners in government, NGOs, non-profits, and companies alike are making toward the goal,” stated David Gerulski, EVP, Integrated Biometrics.
