Integrated Biometrics’ Sherlock Protects the Ukrainian Border

Ukraine has a long border, demanding terrain, and a central location in one of the toughest geopolitical neighborhoods in Europe. As a result, border control is essential for this small but dynamic country.

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine must quickly and accurately verify the identity of thousands of travelers each day across airports, river ports, seaports, highway border crossings, railway stations, and foot traffic. These security checks must immediately identify individuals prohibited from entering Ukraine for any reason, including known criminals or terrorists. Unusually frequent border crossings also generate concern.

Bancomzvjazok JSC recently purchased an additional 100 Integrated Biometrics Sherlock FAP 45 fingerprint sensor for their BPT800 biometric and passport control solution. This tablet-based system works across the entire range of situations, reliably handling the extreme environmental conditions prevalent in remote areas across the country. The State Border Guard Service already uses more than 100 BPT800 units with integrated Sherlock sensors.

BTP800 units containing Sherlock sensors expedite passport and identity verification across Ukrainian and Interpol databases. While currently only used for border control, these units can also support law enforcement, financial services, hospitality, healthcare, and other governmental applications.

Sherlock enhances this tablet-based solution by enabling officers to image fingerprints without turning the tablets over or around, thus preventing individuals in the queue from seeing private information. Since Sherlock runs for hours off the power provided by each tablet, there’s no need for a separate battery pack or power cord. Agents focus on border control rather than worrying about docking stations or where to find fresh batteries.
